An Urgent Message for MEN About Your Bone Health

An Urgent Message for MEN About Your Bone Health

You may be wondering what’s so urgent about your bone health, because most people associate weakening bones with women. In fact, declining bone health is a significant threat to the mobility, independence, and healthy-life expectancy of millions of men around the globe, and its prevalence is increasing as the male population ages.

Fracture rates in men are rising around the globe

An estimated 1 to 2 million men in the United States have osteoporosis (1), and an additional 8 to 13 million have low bone mass. About 13 percent of white U.S. men older than 50 years will experience at least one weakened bone-related fracture in their lifetime (2)>

Hip fracture is the most serious and results in higher overall mortality (3) in men than in women. In fact, men are twice as likely to die after a hip fracture (4).

Around the world, 1 in 5 men aged 50 years and over are at risk of an osteoporotic fracture (5). An osteoporotic fracture is estimated to occur every 3 seconds.

Are your bones secretly fragile? Mine were.

When we’re young, it’s hard to imagine that serious health stuff will happen to us. I was a Marine, in my early 20s, and physically fit. I considered myself to be 100% healthy. I felt I was bullet proof.

But, after serving five years in the U.S. Marine Corps, including multiple deployments in the infantry, I returned stateside only to face a different kind of enemy – the effects of celiac disease.

I had suffered from celiac disease for years. As you may know, with celiac disease, gluten damages the villi in the intestine. I couldn't absorb nutrients and my body started raking nutrients, like calcium, from my bones. My body was tapping into its own reserves in my bones, secretly, silently causing my bones to become pitted and fragile in my early 30s.

This not only impacted the health of my gut, but had been silently degrading the health of my bones for years.

All the doctors failed to recognize the connection and thanks to a physician's assistant recommending a bone density exam, it was discovered. The doctors painted a future filled with broken bones and medication.

This was not going to happen again to my family

When my mother was five months pregnant, my father, a Marine and Vietnam veteran, was told he had cancer and two months after I was born he passed away. He was 35 years old.

I had this fear that I was going to follow in his footsteps to an early grave.

I wanted to play catch with my daughter and soccer with my son. Run around playing tag in the back yard and not worry about tripping and breaking my hip. I wanted to sit at night with my wife and plan the next day. And the next. Plan all the days I had looked forward to while deployed.

I realized I had to figure a few things out.

Deployment: the action of bringing resources into effective action

I searched for actionable solutions that had measurable results. There really weren’t many. Pharmaceutical intervention may address the symptoms, but might not address the underlying root cause.

So, I committed to not just improving my own health but also to helping others reclaim theirs.

I brought together medical professionals at the top of their respective fields to help myself and others create an actionable and effective stronger bones plan suited for their needs, goals and lifestyle.

Yet, it wasn't until after years of working with clients around the globe, helping them each develop a plan for stronger bones, that I realized an unmet need—truly effective, professional-grade supplements designed specifically for bone health.

You see, robust bones need more than just exercise and dietary changes; they require targeted nutritional support.
